Commissioning a painting or illustration begins with a dialogue with the client. This can be made by phone call, email or WhatsApp.
Once the subject of the work(s) have been established, I will make a series of quick thumbnail sketches to try and communicate the themes that have been discussed, sometimes several small sketches can be combined to achieve a favourable resolution.
The ideas from the small sketches are then worked up into a finished drawing. I will then ask the client to approve it before I begin the painting, paying attention to any preferences about the colour palette discussed during the small sketches stage.
The client is shown the work on conclusion to sign off or make any small adjustments.
All work is water-based media and soft pastel on handmade watercolour paper from a mill in Somerset.
Framing
My paintings can be bought framed or unframed. I sometimes have a frame in mind when I am making the painting, in this case I can photograph the work in the frame and email it on. Otherwise a discussion about a suitable frame is a useful way to get the best results. All my frames are made by me including the painting, staining, gilding etc. Unframed work comes float mounted onto acid free board unless otherwise specified.
